Hi Vicki,

I am so glad you are interested in courses like this! I am copying David Junius, the WTBBL Volunteer Services Coordinator (1-800-542-0866) on this email. He will likely have additional information.

For further information about this in Texas, I would contact The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. They are located in Austin but should be able to point you in a good direction.
Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired 1100 W. 45th St.
Austin, TX 78756
Switchboard: (512) 454-8631
http://www.tsbvi.edu/school/contactus.htm

In San Antonio, it looks like Northwest Vista College used to offer such classes. Although, I can't find the class currently, they would be a good place to contact as well.
Northwest Vista College | 3535 N. Ellison Dr. | San Antonio, TX 78251 | (210) 486-4000 http://www.accd.edu/nvc/default.asp

Finally, I found out that there is a nonprofit organization called "Braille Transcribers of Texas" in San Antonio. They can be found here: http://www.brailletexas.org/ at info@brailletexas.org

I also thought you might want to check out this article about Braille transcribers:
http://www.tsbvi.edu/textbooks/afb/transcriber-qa.htm

This should get you started! If you need more help, please contact us again at refhelp@highline.edu

Comment on Do You Read Banned Books? by Dan Kleinman

No books have been banned in the USA for about a half a century. See "National Hogwash Week."

Also see "US Libraries Hit Back Over Challenges to Kids Books," by Sara Hussein, Agence France-Presse [AFP], 6 September 2009.

Given "American Library Association Shamed," by Nat Hentoff, Laurel Leader-Call, 2 March 2007, I ask anyone reading this to explain why the ALA views book burnings, bannings, and jailed librarians in Cuba as NOT censorship, and why people legally keeping children from inappropriate material IS censorship.

Why does the ALA not only refuse to assist jailed Cuban librarians, but go further and actually thwart efforts by others to assist them? Why should members of the public consider the ALA to be authoritative on the definition of what is censorship in local public libraries?

Indeed, why should local libraries care one whit about an organization actively blocking efforts to assist jailed and beaten Cuban librarians and associated censorship and book burnings?

It is also a good idea to bring your bank account number and your bank's routing/ABA number too.
