December Recommended Reading: Science Fiction

Maybe you think because we’re an academic library we can only collect boring books (Oh, I know you wouldn’t think this of us)(we’re talking about him, over there) *vaguely point in the direction of no one*. We know you’re the type of person who loved every single one of the very tiny words on every single one of the 783 pages of Ulysses. You would never think academic texts could be boring, we know. We really do.

But as it turns out when we librarians aren’t busy tightening our hair buns (it’s a fine art that needs a steady hand, trust us), we also find time to build a collection with some pretty entertaining science fiction literature and criticism, for those very few who may have used Ulysses as a door stop, to keep Infinite Jest some company. *point vaguely again, possibly to self*.

Or maybe you’re just the type of person who can enjoy both. Of course you are!

Here are a few looks into December’s very not-boring but not really Ulysses kind of fun (sorry, you) Recommended Reading: Science Fiction.

Neuromancer / William Gibson: You really can’t go wrong with a book about dystopian societies, computer hackers, Rastafarians, a space station and someone named Lady 3Jane Marie-France Tessier-Ashpool.

Welcome to the Monkey House : a collection of short works / by Kurt Vonnegut: But maybe you want to read a short story about a computer who falls in love?

2001, A Space Odyssey [videorecording] : Better than a computer that wants to kill you!

Futureland / Walter Mosley: Everyone is watching you!

Where’s My Jetpack? : a guide to the amazing science fiction future that never arrived / Daniel H. Wilson: Oh, don’t be paranoid. It’s just fiction.

The Science in Science Fiction : 83 SF predictions that became scientific reality / Robert Bly: Or is it?!

Starship Troopers / Robert A. Heinlein: It’s alright, you just need to read about some giant bugs that are attacking you to calm your nerves.

And every library collection wouldn’t be complete without a centerpiece like Mutant 59 : the Plastic-Eaters, right?

Below is the whole list for December. Enjoy!
