February Recommended Reading: Love Stories

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, more than one Christian martyr was named Valentine, but a priest killed about 270 AD by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus probably gave the day its name. As legend has it, the priest fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and signed a letter to her, “from your Valentine.”

Celebrating the coming of spring, the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February, also contributed to the day’s origins. The festivities included fertility rites and a lottery to match women and men.

In the 5th century, a pope changed the name from Lupercalia to St. Valentine’s Day and by the 14th century, the day became associated with love. Formal Valentine cards made their appearance in the 16th century, and became commercially printed in the United States in the mid-1800s; these often depicted Cupid, the winged Roman god of love.
