The scene in which James Cagney pushes a grapefruit into Mae Clark’s face  in (the film) Public Enemy (1931) raised objections from American women’s groups because it depicted physical abuse of women; however, when the film was released in Great Britain, the British Board of Film Censors ordered the scene cut because its unmarried characters were wearing pajamas.”
