Recommended Reading December 2010 ~ Winter Reads

The holiday season is upon us once again, and we’re faced with busy social schedules, family obligations, and the prospect of the New Year.  Fortunately, if gift exchange traditions are impacted by the difficult economy they can be modified to focus on memorable experiences over material goods.  Sometimes the simple gift of one’s time can have a lasting impact.  We’re also well advised to remember our own needs and desires during this busy season – everyone should grant themselves at least one little gift, no?

Here’s a suggestion: give yourself the experience of reading a novel that’s been on your list for too long.  This can have the added benefit of providing a break from the holiday rush.  More good reasons are included in the Values statement of Narrative Magazine, one of our featured Web sites this month (see below): “Literary readers are more than twice as likely as nonreaders to vote, to volunteer, and to be active participants of the communities in which they live. They are more likely to be healthy, to be hired, to create art, and to achieve both academic and economic success. Reading encourages and develops empathy and emotional sophistication, logical thinking, clear expression of ideas, and the ability to comprehend complex and opposing thought systems. Reading opens minds and changes lives.”

With all of this in mind our December 2010 Recommended Reading list is a mixed bag of highly-regarded novels and stories from the 19th and 20th centuries. Give yourself the gift of a “novel experience” this holiday season with a literary selection from your Highline Library.  Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!
