For amber waves of grain,

“Urban Rainbow” – The Artwork of Jeremy Hurd

During September and October we are displaying the artwork of Jeremy Hurd in the Library’s Exhibit & Art Gallery.

Jeremy Hurd graduated from University of Washington with a degree in Art History, focusing on modern and contemporary photography. Photographically, he is interested in reducing everyday objects into lines, shapes, and color. He works primarily in abstracts, still lifes, and street photography.

“Urban Rainbow” shows the colorful side of mundane street objects. Shot in Seattle, Barcelona, Shanghai and Beijing, most people do not notice these bright pops of color, even though they are right in front of their eyes. These photos attempt to bring these unseen colors to the forefront.

November Exhibit: Living Memory – The Photography of Carrie Hall Tomberlin

Carrie Hall Tomberlin will be displaying her photography at the Highline Community College Art Gallery, October 31 – November 30, 2008.

Photography allows one to still a moment on paper and make that memory tangible. These images allude to visual memory and how it permeates daily life. In these images I show how that memory is vivid, yet at the same time, often confused and non-linear. This body of work builds narratives through the association of people and places, addressing mortality and the transient nature of our culture.

The images were created by on film through the use of a Holga camera. The film was scanned and is printed digitally 5 feet long by 2 feet tall on Tyvek. No digital manipulation has taken place aside from basic color correction and appear as they did on film.

Carrie Hall Tomberlin is a photographer and writer who teaches photography and writing. Originally from Western New York State, she received her MFA in photography from Clemson University in Clemson, SC. Currently she teaches Photography at Green River Community College and English at Bellevue College.
