To promote awareness about immigrants and refugees, their challenges as well as their valuable contributions.

What is an immigrant?
An immigrant is someone who chooses to resettle to another country.

What is a refugee?
A refugee is a person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her country of nationality because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

According to the U.S. Department of State, in 2013, 69,909 refugees were admitted to the United States. The leading countries of nationality for refugee admissions were Iraq (28 %), Burma (23%), Bhutan (13%), and Somalia (11 %). Other leading countries included Cuba, Iran, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan.

What is a lawful permanent resident (LPR) or “green card” recipient?
This is defined by immigration law as a person who has been granted lawful permanent residence in the United States. In 2013, a total of 990,553 persons became Lawful Permanent Resident Status of the United States. The leading countries of birth of new LPRs were Mexico (14%), China (7.2%), and India (6.9%).

Celebrating Banned Books Week!

Recommended Reading for September 2012

It’s all about Intellectual Freedom!

Each year, the last week of September is designated Banned Books Week. During this time, we celebrate our democratic freedom to read whatever we want to read. This year September 30 – October 6 marks BBW’s 30th anniversary.

In celebration of Banned Books Week 2012, libraries and bookstores can upload videos to the  Banned Books Week YouTube Channel. Participants can submit either a reading, or a description of a local book challenge.

According to the ALA’s Banned Books Week web site: “BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.”

What is the difference between a challenged book and a banned book?

According to the American Library Association:

A challenge is “an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others.”

A banning is the removal of those challenged materials.

Below is a list of frequently challenged books.  While all of the books and other media on this list were challenged by various organizations and individuals, people concerned with intellectual freedom were able to uphold and maintain public access to most of them.
